Making Dream Catchers

While out on a fun family vacation, try to pack some supplies for those rainy days to keep the kids from going bonkers inside! Why not make a dream catcher! Below will be some guidance on what you will need to pack for your trip and a couple different ways of making dream catchers, ranging from easy to more difficult!

Supplies

  • Paper plates (easy)

  • Metal hoop (difficult)

  • String or yarn (make it colorful!)

  • Feathers

  • Beads

  • Scissors

  • Tape

  • Ribbon

  • Hole Punch

  • Markers

  • Tacky glue

Steps For A Plate Dream Catcher

Cut out the center of the plate, leaving and inch or two around the edge.

Use your markers to decorate your plate.

With your hole punch, make 12 holes (or however many points for loops you want to make) in your plate.

Take your colorful string or yarn and start at one hole.

Depending on the design you want to make on your dream catcher, the basic design will have you take your yarn and loop it into the next hole.

Continue making loops through each hole until all your holes have yarn going through them and you’ve reached your first hole again.

Now the fun! Beginning back at your first hole, loop your yarn around the middle of the yarn that goes between the first and second hole. If you want to add beads to your dream catcher, add your bead first and then loop your yarn.

Continue looping your yarn around until you come to the middle of your dream catcher and a tiny circle is left. To tie off your dream catcher, tie a double knot where you would’ve made your final loop. Cut off the excess yarn and make sure your knot is tight so it doesn’t come undone!

Adding a second or third color of yarn: If you wish to add more color to your dream catcher, go through steps 4-8, or add hole punches in-between the first color of yarn hole punches.

If you want to add hanging feathers, tie yarn around the feather stem securely. Then tie your feather around the bottom of your catcher where a hole is. Double knot and tighten and cut off the excess yarn.

If you want your feather to have beads with it, cut off a piece of yarn at your desired length. Add beads and loop the yarn around it so it stays in place wherever you want it to sit. Get creative! You can definitely make one, two, or even three different strings coming off the bottom of your catcher! After making your string with beads and feathers on it, tie it to the bottom on your dream catcher (if you made more than one, make new hole punches for these strings to go through).

Almost done! Make a hole punch at the very top of your dream catcher. Put tape over the hole and punch it again (this will help make it so your plate doesn’t rip as easily at the top for hanging purposes).

Take ribbon or yarn and make a loop through your new top hole and tie it off.

Hang up your beautiful creation!

Steps For A Metal Hoop Dream Catcher

Wrap your metal hoop with ribbon or yarn. To start, use tacky glue to secure the starting of your wrapping. Make sure your glue is dry and then start wrapping. When you’ve wrapped the entire hoop, you’ll want to slightly overlap where you started and either secure the end with tacky glue again, or make a knot. If you make a knot, this is where you can take another piece of ribbon or yarn to make your hanging loop.

Take your colorful string or yarn and start at the top of the metal hoop.

Pick out a design! For basic designs, tie one end of your yarn at the base of your hoop and stretch the yarn however far you want it to go and make a loop around the hoop making your next point on your catcher.

Continue making loops around the hoop until you get back to where you started. Make sure your first loops are evenly spaced!

Now the fun! Starting where you made your first loop, make a loop around the middle of the yarn that goes between the first and second points. If you want to add beads to your dream catcher, add your bead first and then loop your yarn. It’s ok if your yarn isn’t tight, it’ll be pulled tight as you go around making more loops!

Continue looping your yarn around until you come to the middle of your dream catcher and a tiny circle is left. To tie off your dream catcher, tie a double knot where you would’ve made your final loop. Cut off the excess yarn and make sure your knot is tight so it doesn’t come undone!

Adding a second or third color of yarn: If you wish to add more color to your dream catcher, repeat steps 2-6!

If you want to add hanging feathers, tie yarn around the feather stem securely. Then tie your feather around the bottom of your catcher where a loop was made. Double knot, tighten, and cut off the excess yarn.

If you want your feather to have beads with it, cut off a piece of yarn at your desired length. Add beads and loop the yarn around them so they stay in place wherever you want it to sit. Get creative! You can definitely make one, two, or even three different strings coming off the bottom of your catcher! After making your string with beads and feathers on it, tie it to the bottom on your dream catcher.

Hang up your beautiful creation!

The Meaning Of Dream Catchers

Originated by the Indians, it was believed that the maker of a dream catcher would be blessed with good dreams throughout the night. By hanging it above where they slept, it would move freely during the night and catch the dreams. Some say the good dreams know the way and will pass through the center of the catcher, and the bad dreams, not knowing the way, will be caught in the web of the catcher and be destroyed at the first sign of the sunrise. Others say that all dreams are caught and only the good dreams would slide down the feathers and fall onto the person sleeping below.

It's up to you where you want to hang your dream catcher! It adds a beautiful touch to your RV and makes for a fun family activity! Or share the story of why dream catchers were made and have a spot to hang your dream catchers above your bed in hopes for a good night’s rest of good dreams! It makes for a great rainy day activity and a wonderful way to let your creativity go wild!
