Adding a Backsplash to Your RV Kitchen or Bathroom

Making a minor decorative change to your RV can make a big difference in the way it looks and feels. One simple, affordable, and impressive DIY project that can be done to any RV is adding a backsplash to your kitchen or bathroom. Originally intended to protect walls from splatter and stains, backsplashes have quickly become an eye-catching feature common in most residential homes and modern-day RVs. If you’re ready to transform the look of your RV on a budget and in less than a day, try out this DIY RV makeover idea for installing a backsplash!

Choosing Your Product

Because weight is a concern when dealing with RVs, you’re going to be restricted on what materials you can use. While those ceramic, granite, and glass tiles might look stunning, their heaviness has no place in an RV. Additionally, they are more susceptible to cracking on rough, bumpy roads because of their rigidity. Find a product that looks great, but that’s also lightweight so it doesn’t negatively effect your gas mileage.

Smart Tiles

Notorious among RVers as the best product for revamping the look of outdated kitchens and bathrooms, Smart Tiles are lightweight, flexible, and ultra-adhesive. The Smart Tile company, based in Quebec, Canada, specializes in manufacturing sheets of beautiful gel tiles that resemble glass, even upon closer inspection. A single sheet of tiles can be purchased for $7-$10, making it an economical alternative to a full-fledged renovation. Some other advantages of using this product include:

  • Heat and humidity resistant

  • No grouting or gluing required

  • Easily removable (just heat up with a hair dryer and pull off)

  • Peel-and-stick for an easy DIY installation

  • No special tools needed (just scissors/box cutter and a measuring tape)

You might be able to find Smart Tiles at your local Home Depot or Lowe’s in a limited selection, but you can also order them online to have access to their full product line. A variety of colors, designs, and styles are available so you’ll be sure to find one that fits your design tastes, whether you prefer a bright funky backsplash or a more clean and elegant look.

Installing The Backsplash

Step 1: To begin, prep your work area by cleaning off the surface you intend to tile. The cleaner and smoother the surface, the better the adhesive will stick. It is not recommended to use Smart Tiles on drywall, ceramic, or plywood surfaces. You can however, apply Smart Tiles directly on top of existing backsplashes.

Step 2: After your surface has dried completely, you’re ready to begin applying your tiles. Work methodically as you do this. Measure twice and make precise cuts. For better accuracy, go with a box cutter over scissors, especially when cutting around outlets. Work across horizontally, starting at the spot furthest away from the most heavily trafficked area. If your space has an ‘L’ shaped design, start at the center of the ‘L’ in the corner.

Step 3: As you’re sticking on your sheets, overlap the grout lines to ensure that spacing is even across all rows and columns. Don’t apply firm pressure until the entire backsplash is up, this way you can remove them and make adjustments if necessary. For a clean and finished look, add a Smart Edge self-adhesive border to complete.

Spruce up your RV without spending a fortune by adding a backsplash to your kitchen or bathroom. This relatively hassle-free DIY install will give you the illusion of gorgeous mosaic glass without the associated weight or cost!
